چندی پیش مایکل بوراوی جامعه‌شناسی مشهور آمریکایی – رئیس سابق انجمن جامعه‌شناسی آمریکا و معاون فعلی انجمن بین‌المللی جامعه‌شناسی – میهمان انجمن جامعه‌شناسی ایران بود. بوراوی در بابلسر نیز سخنرانی داشت. در طول اقامت در این شهر، از شدت مسائلی که در این شهر وجود دارد و می‌تواند موضوع پژوهش اجتماعی باشد به وجد آمده بود. به شوخی به یکی از دوستان گفته بود «چرا شما ایرانی‌ها مرا دو سال گروگان نمی‌گیرید تا در این‌جا بمانم و پژوهش کنم؟» در جلسه پرسش و پاسخ بعد از سخنرانی از ایشان درباره الزام به چاپ مقاله در نشریات ISI پرسیده شد. یک دقیقه طول کشید تا به او توضیح داده شد که ISI چیست. اصلا با این مؤسسه آشنا نبود. پاسخ او نیز جالب توجه است....

The organizing committee of the 5th biennial conference of comparative literature would like to invite scholars from various disciplines such as Science, Humanities, History, Politics, Literature, Art, Philosophy, and Religion, to address topics in the interactions of literature and science in any period and any languages in 20-minute papers. The aim is to provide a chance to examine and redefine the scope of interdisciplinary dialogue between Literature and Sciences at both domestic and international levels.

Suggested themes:

• Confrontations between Literature and Science in cultures across the world
• The reflection and/or overriding of superstition/science in the literature of nations
  
• The dialogue of pure/experimental sciences with philosophy and literature in the East and the West and their relevant consequences/achievements
  
• Literary allegories and symbols borrowed from Mathematics, Astronomy, Philosophy and Religion
  
• Architecture, Anthropology, sociology and literature
  
• Literary schools/theories as cultural phenomena
  

Conference Languages: Persian, English, French

Important Deadlines:

Abstracts (not more than 250 words) must reach us by June 19, 2008

Notification of acceptance July 14, 2008

Full articles (not more than 6000 words including notes and bibliography) must reach us by December 20, 2008

new scientific community in Iran

Farhad Khosrovkhavar in a paper delivered at The Iranian Studies Group at MIT (ISG):

This article explores the emergence of a new scientific community in Iran. In spite of all the major problems in the country, according to the prevailing international norms (the number of scientific articles published in international journals and their increase throughout the years), there is a remarkable progress made in some scientific fields in Iran during the last two decades. The aim of this article is to display the identity problems of this new group and their relationship to the Iranian society and the 'imagined' world scientific community at large.

To me, living in Iran, this new scientific community is formed here as well. Walking in the dark corridors of Tehran universities, I hear voices searching for new spaces for thinking and research.
