new scientific community in Iran

Farhad Khosrovkhavar in a paper delivered at The Iranian Studies Group at MIT (ISG):

In spite of all the major problems in the country, according to the prevailing international norms (the number of scientific articles published in international journals and their increase throughout the years), there is a remarkable progress made in some scientific fields in Iran during the last two decades. The aim of this article is to display the identity problems of this new group and their relationship to the Iranian society and the 'imagined' world scientific community at large.
To me, living in Iran, this new scientific community is formed here as well. Walking in the dark corridors of Tehran universities, I hear voices searching for new spaces for thinking and research.
